What the Generate menu is

The Generate menu is the one place where new itineraries begin. It asks a single question, "How would you like to explore?", and offers four ways to answer.

You can open it from two places:

  • the orange sparkle button at the top right of the Explore tab, or
  • the Generate sparkle in the plus menu.

Both open the same thing.

The four ways to start

  • Quick Find - great things to do nearby. Date nights, days out, food for any diet.
  • Discoveries - an itinerary of places to visit, built around what you are interested in.
  • Road Trip - a multi-stop driving route between two places.
  • Build it myself - a manual itinerary, with the stops you choose.

Discoveries, Road Trip and Quick Find use AI, so they need an Itineru+ plan. Building it yourself does not, and is always available.

Quick Find

Quick Find is for right now. You tell it roughly where you are and roughly what you fancy, and it comes back with places nearby.

  1. Open Generate and tap Quick Find.
  2. Under "Where are you?", Itineru tries to find your location. You can also type a city or a neighbourhood and pick it from the list. Picking from the list matters, because that is what gives Itineru the exact spot to search around.
  3. Under "What are you looking for?", type what you want in your own words. Something like "date-night dinner" or "gluten-free brunch".
  4. Or pick an interest from the row of chips: Local favourites, Date night, Live music, Outdoors, Brunch, Family-friendly, Cheap eats, Must-sees, Architecture, History, Museums, Parks, Coffee, Vegan food, Bakeries, Bars, Nightlife, Markets, Shopping, Bookshops, Street art, Photography. You can pick more than one. You can use chips on their own, without typing anything.
  5. Tap Find Places.

What happens next. You get a list of places. Tap one to read more about it. Tap the heart to save a single place, or tick several and tap Save at the bottom to save them all at once. Saved places live under Saved Places.

If you want to change your search, tap New Search. The places you already found stay where they are, and there is a "Places you found" link to get back to them.

Discoveries

Discoveries builds you a proper itinerary: a set of stops, in a sensible order, with the walking or driving between them worked out.

  1. Open Generate and tap Discoveries.
  2. Under Where to start, choose the place your day begins.
  3. Choose how you are getting around: Walking (fully walkable), Car and Walk (short drives between stops), or Transit and Walk.
  4. Add anything you want Itineru to know in your own words. This is the free-text preferences box, and it is worth using. "Nothing too steep", "we have a toddler", "back by six".
  5. Choose roughly how many Stops you want: Any, 3 to 5, 6 to 8, or 9 to 12.
  6. Choose how far you are willing to range: Any, 2 km, 5 km, or 10 km.
  7. Pick your Interests from the chips: Historical, Sports, Food and Dining, Arts and Culture, Nature and Parks, Architecture, Shopping, Nightlife, Religious, Family-Friendly, Must Sees, Tourist Hotspots, Photo Opportunities, Local Cuisine, Support Local.
  8. Tap Generate.

What happens next. Itineru builds the itinerary. This takes a little while, and you can carry on using the app while it works. When it is ready, it appears in your Saved tab and you can open it.

Road Trip

A road trip is a driving route with stops worth pulling over for along the way.

  1. Open Generate and tap Road Trip.
  2. Give the trip a name if you like, for example "Coastal drive to Barcelona".
  3. Set the Route: where you are starting and where you are heading.
  4. Add any notes about the trip, and any specific requests. Kid-friendly stops. Pet-friendly stops. Whatever matters to you.
  5. Choose roughly how many stops you want: Any, 3 to 5, 6 to 8, or 9 to 12.
  6. Pick your interests: Must-Sees, Scenic Routes, Local Cuisine, Support Local, Hidden Gems, Photo Stops.
  7. Tap Generate.

What happens next. Same as Discoveries. The route is built in the background and lands in your Saved tab when it is done.

Build it myself

If you would rather not use AI, or you already know exactly where you are going:

  1. Open Generate and tap Build it myself.
  2. Give the itinerary a name.
  3. Add your stops, one at a time. You can drag them into the order you want, and remove any you change your mind about.
  4. Add a description if you like.
  5. Tap Save.

You need at least two stops for it to be an itinerary.

Once an itinerary exists

Open it from the Saved tab. From there you can:

  • Start it, and follow it stop by stop. See Doing an itinerary.
  • Play the audio guide, if you have one. See Immersive audio.
  • Add or remove stops, and reorder them.
  • Find more places to add, if Itineru has suggestions.
  • Read Before You Go - entry requirements, weather, practical information, cultural etiquette, key phrases, and local notes for where you are going.
  • Add it to a trip, so it sits with the rest of your plans. See Collections and trips.
  • Add expenses against it, or add it to your calendar, from the more-options menu.
  • Share it with someone.

If a stop has no location

Occasionally Itineru cannot verify exactly where a stop is. When that happens it says so rather than guessing, and the stop is marked as unverified. You can set the location yourself by tapping the stop and choosing the right place.

We would rather tell you we do not know than send you to the wrong street.
