Expenses and splitting
What this is
Expenses keeps track of what a trip cost and, if you were not the only one paying, who owes whom. It is for the meal someone else picked up, the taxi you split three ways, and the museum tickets you bought for everyone.
Getting there
Tap the plus button, then Expenses. Or open the Atlas and tap the Expenses tile.
The screen has three tabs along the top: Expenses, Calculator and Rates. The calculator and rates are covered in Currency and exchange rates.
Making a trip to put expenses in
Expenses live inside a trip.
- On the Expenses tab, tap New Trip at the top right.
- Give it a name, and set its currency.
- Add the people who are on it. You can add friends, or add someone by name if they are not on Itineru.
What happens next. The trip becomes the one you are looking at, and any expense you add goes into it.
Logging an expense
- On the Expenses tab, with a trip open, add an expense.
- Basics - what it was, how much, and which category: food, accommodation, transportation, activities, shopping or other.
- Payment - who actually paid.
- Split - who it was for, and how it is divided.
- Save it.
What happens next. The expense appears in the list, and the balances update straight away.
The three ways to split
- Even - the amount is divided equally between everyone you tick.
- Custom - you type the exact amount each person owes. Itineru shows you how much is still unaccounted for, so the parts always add up to the whole.
- Percent - you give each person a percentage. Itineru tells you if the percentages go over 100.
If you open an old expense to edit it, Itineru works out which kind of split it was and keeps it. A 70/30 split does not quietly become 50/50.
Editing and deleting
Swipe an expense in the list to edit or delete it. The balances update as soon as you do.
Who owes whom
The Settlements card shows the balances: who is owed money, and who owes it. If there are a lot of them, tap "Show all" to see the full list.
Settling up
When someone pays you back, tap Settle up on that line and confirm the amount. The balance updates straight away, and the payment appears in the payment history so you can both see what has been squared away.
You can settle part of a debt as well as all of it. Pay back half, and the rest stays on the balance.
Two things to know. You can only settle a debt that involves you, and both people need an Itineru account. A payment to or from a guest you added by name cannot be recorded this way.
Expenses in another currency
If you paid in a different currency from the trip's currency, Itineru converts it and shows both: what you actually paid, and what it comes to in the trip's currency.
Logging an expense against an itinerary
Open an itinerary, open its more-options menu, and tap Add Expenses. The expense arrives with the place and the itinerary already filled in, so you do not have to type them again.
